Schindler elevators runs the tutorial system TIM-RS

Schindler elevators and escalators AG, situated in Luzern-Ebikon/ Switzerland, belongs to the top five in the international business of elevators and escalators. For creating and organising documents Schindler decided to use the English version of the tutorial system TIM-RS and Frame Maker for editing. The decision based on the the very good experiences in usability during the very short period of prototype testing.
Setup and instruction manuals are the main part of Schindler´s documentation that has to be delivered. Most of the 38000 Schindler employees worldwide use one of these documents at least. The documents are created automatically by the tutorial system TIM-RS combined with FrameMaker and provided in every subsidiary worldwide for instance in Mulhouse, Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Randolph automatically as well.
Special kinds of texts and graphics are used in a lot of documents and therefore could be reused efficiently. The high percentage of replication in reusing is directly related to the savings of time and money.
Translation management is well performed semi-automatically by TIM-RS by storing and reusing formerly translated moduls and structured parts. Anytime, an overview on what has already been translated and what has to be translated is possible. That saves a lot of time and money.
Schindler provides all documents not only in the print layout, but as a html-document, as well. This process runs automatically, without any actions by an editor. The editor creates the document in FrameMaker and stores it in TIM-RS. In the next step TIM RS creates a PDF document and an XML document for processing. The XML document is the base for generating several html-pages by XSL and link them together. These html-pages can be used for online publication.
